A New Beginning

For many years now, every time I visited my relatives in Mexico, I came back inspired by the artisans there. Our ceramics journey took off in the latter half of 2023. What began as a personal project idea with my fiancée, led to a plethora of research that quickly piqued my interest. At its root, ceramic creation is art, and I have always had a tendency to enjoy crafts of all sorts. However, with ceramics, you are never in full control of the process. In order to progress, this was a feeling that I had to quickly adapt to. I naturally am someone who enjoys being in control of the situation they are in. Therefore, I clashed with the fact that this process is quite opposite to that. No matter the crafter’s skill level, there is always room for error. To my surprise, I soon began to look forward to the suspense behind creating my pieces.

I truly think that until you take part in crafting ceramics yourself, you cannot fully appreciate the high degree of technical skill involved in successfully making just one piece. Over the past months, I developed an increased respect for artisans, ceramicists and business owners. Furthermore, my short journey instantly shifted the way I viewed every piece of pottery. It is surprising to think that we are so accustomed to pots, since we are surrounded by them every day. At the end of the day, grocery stores, restaurants, museums and more are filled with decorative and functional pottery that had to be carefully crafted by someone. It is now rewarding to me to understand the process that gets a singular piece to be held or viewed by the public.

Each day, diving deeper into the world of ceramics only strengthens my level of dedication. I have always loved dinnerware and how it can make or break a home's sense of uniformity, but most importantly, it is what brings one’s personal touch to the table. Whether you come in contact with our pieces by meeting us in person or receive them at your doorstep, our hope is that Odyssey Ceramics provides the vessels into which you can place your own meaning.
